We love it when people find creative ways of supporting our cause; is signifies the hope and life that can be brought to a very depressing subject. ExploreZA chose photos as a way of creating awareness about the dire need for intervention in the lives of those being trafficked, organising an Instameet. Photographers across Johannesburg met in the early hours of the morning to learn about trafficking and to take photos which they uploaded onto Instagram, creating awareness about the issue.

30 creatives got together at 5:30 am on Saturday, 12th May to do a photo shoot in the streets of Johannesburg. The selected theme was ‘Fairy Tale’ depicting the dreams that traffickers use to lure people into a life of slavery. Traffickers lure people with false job opportunities, marriages or education, only to find themselves forced into a life of prostitution, forced labour or a life of crime.

The creatives made their way through town taking photos that would depict stories of what victims may experience; a fairy tale dream which results in a devastating reality. Many posed with our Red Flag, which represent the clues that help our team identify whether an individual is potentially being trafficked. Some of these red flags include a woman travelling on her own, looking confused and drugged up or perhaps where someone seems to be dominating an individual; talking on their behalf to name a few. Our team uses these indicators to assess the likelihood of a potential victims being trafficked. Due to our model of intervention many destinies have been changed and precious lives have been prevented from entering a life of exploitation. In many ways these red flags represent hope. Hope of a better future, a free future.
